Machja is a contemporary fair trade company. Far from the longstanding cliché of predictable and bland, Machja has decided to prove that social and environmental consciousness can be synonymous with sexy.
The designs, inspired by the island of Corsica (embroidery or flocking), constitute Machja’s trademark.
The founders’ approach is one of inclusion (Corsica and Asia) and based on the principles of respect :
- Respect for the individual
- Respect for the environment
- Respect for the consumer
Respect for the individual
Machja chooses producers who guarantee their workers fair wages and decent working conditions. Machja sweatshirts and t-shirts are made in the Tamil Nadu region of southern India. The workshop is run by a convent of Franciscan nuns, and employs 120 disabled young women.
Machja jeans (launched in Spring 2006) are made of organic cotton (from Mali, Senegal and Cameroon) certified by Max Havelaar, and are sown and assembled in a Tunisian factory awaiting Max Havelaar certification.
Respect for the environment
All articles are made of totally natural materials. Machja uses only certified (Eco-cert, Skal et IMO) organic cotton, free of pesticides and polluting chemicals.
Why organic cotton ?
Conventional cotton is the highest polluting crop on earth, estimated to contaminate 25 million people every year. The pesticides used in cotton production pollute the soil, the air, and the water. More than 20000 deaths are directly linked to agricultural pesticide use each year. 107 active ingredients contained in the pesticides used in cotton are thought to cause cancer.
Respect for the consumer
Machja’s style can be described as “casual chic”, aligning trendy cuts, noble fabrics and fine details. In fact, the intricate details are what make the line particularly adapted to the needs of the most demanding customers.

Helping the disadvantaged, boosting Corsica’s image, proposing a beautiful selection of clothing are the things that drive Machja’s founders (Catherine Soundirarassou, Indo-Vietnamese, and Jean Louis Rossi, Corsican), deeply attached to their origins, all the while linking fashion with ethics.
